About "TMJ disorder"
The joint that connects the jawbone to the skull is called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Pain in the TMJ is caused by arthritis, jaw injury, or some genetic factors. People who grind and clench their teeth at night (bruxism) might also develop TMJ disorder. The symptoms of TMJ disorders are pain and tenderness in the jaw and TMJ joint, pain around the ear, difficulty chewing, facial pain, clicking sound on opening and closing the mouth, and difficulty in opening and closing the mouth. Usually, TMJ disorders are treated by using painkillers, anti-inflammatory, and muscle relaxant medications. Apart from drugs, oral splints and mouth guards also help reduce the discomfort. Surgical treatment options like arthrocentesis, corticosteroid injections, TMJ arthroscopy, and modified condylotomy are also available.
