Technology has become a major part of our lives. Through this article, I have explained the impact of technology on human character and mental health.
Coming to a point in life where you find no way out from the same old thoughts and misery is just like saying that I have nothing left in my life anymore. That does not mean you do not have anything valuable left in your so-called sad life. Many people in this world lose hope after facing some kind of death of a near and dear one or any dreadful disease.
In modern science, such kind of feeling is related to psychological issues in an individual. This kind of performance by a person can lead to some serious chronic mental disorders. When a child is born with some kind of abnormality, we suspect that might be the fault of the parents or previous life’s mistake. This shows how we perceive things that actually may or may not be the real cause.
It is all about how the human mind’s cognitive and perceptual characteristics act to give us such results. We can never know the fact behind such a condition, but our mind always keeps on searching for new ideas and thoughts.
The human mind is so complex, yet very innovative which can bring out numerous ideologies and creations that can revolutionize the face of the human race. Though it is very clear that our next generation is coming up with a lot of modifications and astonishing strategical changes since childhood, there is some lacuna present that cannot be overlooked. Nowadays, children tend to become more passive readers. They tend to rely more on technologies. The work that used to take time for completion seems to be easier for the youngsters.
As a result, people try to make things happen without much effort and wasting time. But, this is hampering the normal psychosocial aspect of an individual. The neurons in our brain need stimulants to work and grow. The more stimulation is provided, the more active they become. Similarly, the lesser the stimulation, the less active they become. This causes unnatural degeneration of the neurons before the normal aging process. And in turn, this causes loss of memory, thinking capacity, and concentration.
More advances in technologies provide the advantage of gaining more knowledge and increasing intelligence quotient, but on the other hand, it is indirectly hampering health by divergence from normal sleeping, waking, and eating schedules.
Keeping pace with technology is good as far as our health is not affected. But, having an excuse for skipping meals due to working for a long time in the office or watching television is just not good. We all need to look after ourselves because if we are not fit, we can never get another chance to do whatever we want to explore with the help of the technical issues in our life. We should always follow a strict regimen once we start a day, which gives us a fruitful result in the night.
Parents and health care professionals are concerned about the increased screen time and use of electronics in children. However, the same activity also leads to problems in teens and adults. Some health issues caused by electronic use are as follows:
Poor Posture Causes Aches and Pains: Using a computer or reclining in a bed or a chair with the phone for prolonged hours causes health issues associated with poor posture. This results in achiness along the spine of the neck and back as well as pain in the muscles and joints. Have a supportive chair and a suitable desk to practice safe positioning while using the gadgets.
Repetitive Stress Injuries: Carpal tunnel syndrome is perhaps the most commonly found stress injury frequently associated with computer and electronics use. Issues like 'texting thumb' cause ongoing soreness and dexterity issues in many people. Take breaks from work and stretch frequently to prevent it.
Eye Strain and Retinal Cell Damage: The blue lights from electronic screens can actually damage the cells in the eyes. This is more frequent if a lot of time is spent staring at a screen without any breaks. Temporary pain and eyestrain are the initial signs that something is wrong. Use applications and screen filters that reduce blue light, and take breaks frequently.
Radio and Electromagnetic Frequency Radiation: Wi-Fi routers and the wireless electronic devices emit radiation. This can be particularly dangerous for fetuses, infants, and children. Studies have also proved a correlation between increased cell phone use and the occurrence of nerve cell tumors. The WHO has classified phones as potential carcinogens so, minimize exposure to phones and stay distant from routers and other radiation sources.
Emotional and Behavioral Changes: Computers, phones, and related actions like gaming, social media use, etc. influence how people feel and behave. This is particularly seen in people who depend on electronics for networking and entertainment as their dopamine levels may get linked to gadget usage. If they discontinue, they may get irritable or portray other negative behaviors.
The plethora of health issues caused by electronic use affects adults, teens, and children daily. As it is impossible to avoid all computers and gadgets in this modern times, regulating the amount of time spent in front of them can have a great impact on the general health and well-being. Some general solutions for healthy technology use are as follows:
Take frequent breaks, both large and small. A break from devices can be as small as stepping away from the desk to walk across the room or as large as having a technology blackout for an entire day every week.
Look out for your motivations. Try minimizing the number of posts or status updates you make daily. Ask yourself the reason for posting them, whether for narcissistic reasons or with connection as a goal.
Give your work or entertainment space a makeover. An improved-placed desk or chair and better lighting can make a great impact on physical and emotional well-being.
Turn off all the lights. To avoid having disrupted sleep rhythms, turn off all the screens an hour or two before going to bed.
Exercise in the forms of daily activities, work, physical, and mental can improve the endurance, and overall maintenance of the body’s musculoskeletal and neurological aspects. Relaxing and taking short breaks in between work for 15 to 20 minutes like having green tea, interacting with friends and colleagues, taking a walk, etc., works wonderfully. Stretching is another wonderful way of breaking all the tiredness in the body. Neck and shoulder side stretches, spine rotation, and upper and lower extremity stretches have proven to be very effective.
