How can I handle Empagliflozin side effects with T2D at 30?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 30 years old and I am a type 2 diabetic. Right now, I take Lantus 30 units at night. In the morning, I take Gemer DS 2, and after breakfast, I take 12 mg Jardiance.

Now my sugar is under control, but because of Jardiance, I usually have penile infections and balanitis. I have read on the internet that Jardiance has side effects of this type because it flushes out sugar from the urine.

Can I take another medicine, like Voglibose, or another that is effective? Or should I take Novorapid along with Lantus at my morning meal?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Urinary infection is the most common side effect of the Empagliflozin (Jardiance). I can advise you on a change in medication, but you need to be very vigilant initially for any fluctuations.

Your exact blood sugar values might have given a better understanding, though. I will suggest a few things to you. Please follow them:

  • I am modifying your Gemer medication and adding Voglibose. Stop using Jardiance. Take the tablet Gemer DS (Glimpiride) 3 mg in the morning, 15 minutes before breakfast. Take the Voglibo tablet (Voglibose) 0.2 mg just before the first bite of your breakfast. Rest, continue with the same medication at night.
  • Be very strict with yourself and have a controlled diet with more fruits and salads.
  • Do regular yoga and exercise.
  • Maintain thorough hygiene and plenty of water.
  • You may have some stomach disturbances initially, but they may settle down eventually. Have a good enough amount of curd in your diet.
  • Measure your values, especially after four to five days, and get back to me for advice, so that, depending on that, how to manage can be decided for any modifications or continuation of the same treatment.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
