Will I get pregnant after having unprotected intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had my first intercourse with my boyfriend, and it was unprotected. My last period date was due last month. I am scared, what if I get pregnant? What can be done now to stop if there is any chance of getting pregnant?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is normal for you to be worried, as nobody wants an unplanned pregnancy. The probability of getting pregnant or not depends on some factors, like:

1. When you had sex, as this would help us to know if you were within your fertile window (period around and during ovulation when the chances of pregnancy are very high) or not. You have provided the day your last period started, but you have not provided the date you had unprotected sex. So, kindly provide the date so that we can estimate the risk of pregnancy following unprotected sex at that period.

2. If it is a ejaculatory sex, if ejaculation occurred when he was inside your vagina. If ejaculation occurred outside the vagina, then the risk of pregnancy is negligible. However, if you are not sure of any of the above, but the time you had unprotected sex is not more than 72 hours, kindly get an emergency contraceptive medicine today and take it. This would help to reduce the risk of getting pregnant significantly. Do let me know if you have other questions, and provide the date you had sex.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

This happened yesterday.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Just get an I-pill (Levonorgestrel) or Plan B (Levonorgestrel). But if you are sure he ejaculated outside, then there will be no need to take the emergency contraception.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
