How does TNBC impact mental health and emotional well-being?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am interested in understanding the specifics of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and its impact on various aspects of health. Can you explain what makes triple-negative breast cancer different from other types of breast cancer?

How does the lack of hormone receptors in TNBC affect treatment? What are the common symptoms and challenges associated with TNBC? Additionally, how does TNBC impact mental health and emotional well-being?

Are there specific side effects of TNBC treatments that influence mood and cognitive function? How might TNBC affect sleep patterns, and what are the potential sleep disturbances associated with the condition and its treatments? What are some strategies or lifestyle changes that might help manage the symptoms and side effects of TNBC?

When should one consider seeking professional advice to manage the effects of TNBC?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for posting your query.

Symptoms of triple-negative breast cancer are:

  1. Changes in breast shape.

  2. Mass or suspicious finding on a mammogram.

  3. Breast or nipple pain.

  4. Discharge from the nipple.

  5. Nipple inversion.

  6. Swelling of the breast.

  7. A lump.

  8. Thickening of the nipple skin.

Symptoms of TNBC are similar to other forms of breast cancer and can include:

  1. A new lump or mass on the breast.
  2. Changes in the size, shape, or feel of your breast (for example., pitting, swelling).
  3. Changes in skin texture (for example., an “orange peel” texture, puckering, dimpling, bumps, or rash).

About 80 to 90 percent of patients with triple-negative breast cancer are diagnosed at stages I, II, or III. This is when the disease can potentially be cured.

Most patients will see a doctor after feeling a lump in their breast or noticing a change in the feel or appearance of their breasts. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a rare type of breast cancer. It accounts for 15 percent of all breast cancer cases. Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for about 10 to 15 percent of all breast cancers.

These cancers tend to be more common in women younger than age 40, who are Black, or who have a BRCA1 (breast cancer gene 1) mutation. At stage 3, triple-negative breast cancer has grown extensively, invaded nearby tissues, and has likely spread to lymph nodes.

The immunotherapy approved for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer is called Pembrolizumab. It can be used with chemotherapy or other medicines before surgery and then continued alone after surgery to treat early-stage, triple-negative breast cancer at high risk of recurrence.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
