What is the guide to avoid shoulder dislocation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 21 years old. I was wondering due to my shoulder being really bad and after doing surgery and still, even after that I am always dislocating it. I have been trying to tape it but I am not one hundred percent sure how to do that, so it will minimize the chances of it dislocating while snowboarding. I have been wondering whether the kino tape would be better or just a normal sports tape and if you could give me tips on how to tape my shoulder, it will be really helpful. I do exercises to try to stabilize shoulder but not with alot of progress.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your concern. In your case, taping can help you little in stabilizing the joint. However, Kinesio tape helps you to recruit or inhibit muscle and is of less help in providing stability to the joint. If you want to tape, then go for rigid tape. If you were my patient, I would honestly suggest you go to a good arthroscopic surgery and get your stabilization surgery properly and follow the proper rehabilitation protocol before attempting to start your sport.

You have to first regain your stability range and strength before introducing to your sport again. If you are really keen only in taping, then tape your shoulder in that position which limits your sideways lifting and outward rotation of the shoulder which is actually a difficult position to limit. Stabilize your scapular muscles and can limit the scapular movement limiting the shoulder mobility. However, in a long run, this will not help you to make you independent. Just think about getting a good arthroscopic stabilization to your shoulder.
