Should a person be concerned about self-harm?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Last year, I struggled with self-harm for a brief period but stopped. Then, last weekend, I did it again. I do not plan on doing it again and feel I can stop on my own. Should I still seek help?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Before I answer your question, I need to know a few things:

  1. What is your age and gender?
  2. Any medical or psychiatric illness in the past?
  3. Any history of similar complaints in the family?
  4. What was the duration of the last episode year?
  5. What was the duration of the current episode?
  6. Are there any precipitating factors for any of these episodes?

Generally speaking, it is difficult to answer correctly with available information, but any recurrence (second time in your case) typically requires further detailed elaboration. It happens when you have unacceptable thoughts that are not controlled. To conclude, it is necessary to seek help in your case. If you are comfortable online, contact me for further evaluation and management.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
