Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a brother. He is a sociopath. As a kid, he was beaten up by my father as well. He daily tortures our family. He blames us for his troubles and shouts and breaks things in the house. He also poses a physical danger. My mother is attached to him. He demands money every day. We are undergoing financial trouble. Kindly help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to the icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I completely understand that you and family are very disturbed due to brother's disruptive behavior.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Thanks.

The Probable causes

The probable causes include such as traumatic early life experiences, harsh punishment, etc.

Investigations to be done

A clinical psychologist needs his complete psychological assessment, which will diagnose his condition and recommend a suitable form of treatment accordingly.

Treatment plan

Your information about your brother's behaviors strongly indicates a behavioral problem but is insufficient to establish a firm diagnosis. Your parents need to go to a psychologist for his complete psychodiagnostic assessment. Then the psychologist will provide individual psychotherapy, where he will be taught anger management and other techniques to control his problems. Further, family counseling is required so that you people get trained in dealing with his problematic behaviors.

Preventive measures

Do consult with a psychologist at your earliest. Research has shown that people who take psychotherapy at the initial stage of the onset of symptoms have more chances of improvement. At the same time, delay in treatment may worsen the symptoms and suffering.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
