Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 37 and recently diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. My fingers and knees hurt, and I also have psoriasis on my scalp and elbows. Methotrexate made me feel nauseous and tired, and my blood work showed high liver enzymes. My doctor might change my medication, but I am worried about my liver. Are there safer treatment options to help with both arthritis and psoriasis?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am sorry you are dealing with these challenges. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and psoriasis can be tough to manage, especially with medication side effects. It is understandable to be concerned about the impact on your liver and ability to work.
Other treatment options besides Methotrexate may help control both PsA and psoriasis without putting too much strain on your liver. Biologics like Adalimumab (Humira), Etanercept (Enbrel), and Infliximab (Remicade) target specific immune system pathways and are generally less harsh on the liver. Janus kinase inhibitors like Tofacitinib (Xeljanz) or Upadacitinib (Rinvoq) can also be options. For less severe cases, Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) or Leflunomide (Arava) can be used with less liver impact, though monitoring is still necessary. Your doctor will help you find the best treatment for you.
Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.
Thank you.
