Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am contacting you for information and guidance on the topic of preterm birth. My sister-in-law gave birth to a preterm baby. I am eager to understand the potential risks of having a preterm baby. How to take care of this baby? She was born in her 36th week before her term. Is there any special care to be taken for her or can she be considered a normal baby? Kindly suggest.

Answered by Dr. Monica Mathur

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The preterm baby usually has complete mental development as well as physical development. The only difference is that the baby is not fully developed, especially the skin, so the chances of infection are increased. Preterm babies are more vulnerable to temperature variations to infections, and they need extra care as compared to full-term babies. So, first of all, it is important to keep the baby warm by keeping the baby close to the mother instead of in a cradle. The second thing is that the baby should be immunized as per the schedule so that the chances of infections are reduced. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
