Why does someone feel sad after having intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Why do I feel so sad after intercourse with my husband?

It does not happen very often, but I do not know why I have this feeling.

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

What you have described is referred to as post-coital dysphoria or, more commonly, post-coital blues. There has been research done to investigate what causes a woman to feel sad immediately after having sexual intercourse, and here are some main findings.

Sexual intercourse and orgasm act as a trigger for hormonal changes in the body. These changes may lead to feelings of sadness or tears.

Some women, who might have experienced sexual assault in childhood, can feel depressed and anxious while having sex. This can be linked to the feelings of guilt and shame associated with the assault or abuse in the past. Some researchers suggest that the sadness after sex can be because of the perceived loss of intimacy that builds up during the intercourse.

These are some of the points you can think about. Please note down what goes on in your mind during such times. Try to recall what thoughts go through your mind when you cry or feel sad. Finding out those thoughts can give you a key to figuring out the cause in your case. Counseling sessions might be helpful if the condition is leading to disturbance.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me know if I need to assist you further.

Thank you.
