What could be the reason for chronic heel pain in the morning?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 49-year-old male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighing 211.6 pounds. I have been experiencing pain in my left heel for the past six months. The pain occurs when I wake up in the morning and also when I walk after sitting for a long period. It usually persists until I walk for a few minutes. The pain began around six months ago without any specific injury. Initially, it was low-intensity pain that did not last long, but over time, both the intensity and duration have increased. I have been taking anti-inflammatory medication intermittently, but it has not been very effective. My uric acid level is 260 µmol/L.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

It sounds like you might be dealing with a condition called plantar fasciitis, which is a common cause of heel pain. This condition involves inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. It often causes pain when you first get up in the morning or after sitting for a long period.

Given your symptoms and the lack of improvement with anti-inflammatory medication, I suggest you consult a specialist, such as a podiatrist, for a proper diagnosis. They may suggest you physical therapy, stretching exercises, or custom orthotics to help alleviate the pain. Additionally, they might suggest lifestyle changes, such as weight management, as excess weight can contribute to heel pain.

Since you have mentioned that the pain has been persistent and worsening, it is important to get a thorough evaluation to rule out other potential causes, such as heel spurs or arthritis.

I suggest you consult with a physiotherapist and get electrotherapy for two weeks. Additionally, I suggest you apply ice twice a day and wear heel gel pads while at work. These measures can help manage the pain.

I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
