What causes a person to work without eating and taking rest?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I want to know whether my father is having a manic episode. He is always aggressive and forces his assertiveness all the time. He misses his sleep, and he does not care about losing it. He is not stopping his work and not noticing it. My mother noticed it and tried to talk with him about being a workaholic. He does his work temporarily, and does not stop his work. Many other people around him have noticed his intensity. He does not behave like a normal person.

He needs to be very important and wants to be seen every time. He does his daily exercise countlessly. He walked in a mall for four to five hours, and he does not feel exhausted. Usually, he goes for a walk for two hours daily. He feels that it is nothing for him. He swims twice a day, and does things that take a lot of effort. He does not take time to eat and sleep. He does not take vacation normally, and he needs his vacation to be busy. Until now, I did not like bringing things to his attention and making him worry about them. Please tell me whether this behavior seems to be normal.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand from the given information that your father is having a type-A personality (a group of people that are more competitive, highly organized, ambitious, impatient, highly aware of time management, or aggressive). These people are tough to deal, and they are assertive and angry. They have immense energy, courage, and use every opportunity to prove that they are the best.

I suggest you get along with him, and keep secrets and tactics to handle him. If he is very aggressive, then it is good to have a consultation with a psychiatrist to keep his nerves under control. The doctor can prescribe medicines if he finds him manic. An aggressive character in males can show his way of being supremacy. You can try to have tactics to boost his ego and get your work done.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
