Can the paleo diet help with weight reduction in an elderly woman with multiple health concerns?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has been taking medication for 30 years to treat her health concerns, which include bipolar disorder and heart troubles. Her height is 5 feet, and she weighs 207 pounds. She is 53 years old. She is also suffering from wheezing problems while walking and doing simple work. She also has thyroid and mild diabetes. Some doctors advised her to take a paleo diet for weight loss. So please suggest me a solution.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Your mother has been on psychiatric medications for quite some time. Weight gain is a potential adverse effect of lithium. But, weighing its benefits with adverse effects, it is the gold standard for treating mood disorders. Hence, I suggest she continue the medicines. But, a strict diet consisting of vegetables and whole grains is suggested. Apart from this, a regular brisk walk and exercise would do her good to lose weight and to keep her sugars under control. Diet and exercise will help her in the long run.

I hope this will help you. You can follow up for further queries.

Thank you.
