Is checking on a locked door multiple times a mental disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got this condition where I doubted everything. I do like checking if I locked my door a lot of times and fearing someone breaking in. Is it a mental disorder? And if it is, could you please give me a prescription?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand that you are concerned about your checking behavior and fear of someone breaking in. It may be due to any past event related to someone breaking in or it can be a part of a psychological disorder. You need to go to a psychologist for a complete psychological assessment who will confirm your diagnosis. After that, you can take a prescription from a doctor and psychological treatment from a psychologist. The probable diagnosis can be obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It needs confirmation after assessment.

Psychotherapy is the most commonly used treatment by professional psychologists to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is indicated through research that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) techniques including "exposure and response prevention", "cognitive restructuring", and "relaxation exercises" are the most effective techniques which produce positive outcomes. You are suggested to find a psychologist in your nearby area and ask for psychotherapy. You can also take online consultations for this purpose. I hope this information is helpful to you. Do take a follow-up if you feel the need. I appreciate you consulted online for your condition at this initial stage. Get treatment at your earliest. Delay in treatment may cause worsening of your symptoms.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
