Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 25-year-old teacher, and our school has been affected by norovirus. I have been vomiting for 24 hours with blood streaks and severe abdominal cramps. I could not keep down water or ice chips, and I nearly fainted walking to the bathroom. My lips are cracking from dehydration. How long is norovirus contagious before and after symptoms? Could this be cleared up in three days? My principal is pressuring teachers to return as soon as the vomiting stops is that safe for students? Should I seek medical attention due to dehydration?
kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to iCliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
First, do not panic; norovirus is a self-limiting infection. That said, staying hydrated is essential. If vomiting persists and you cannot keep fluids down, and as you mentioned, there are signs of dehydration, you should consider going to the emergency department for intravenous (IV) fluids.
If vomiting has decreased or stopped, start taking fluids to maintain hydration. Avoid spicy and heavy foods. Stick to easily digestible options like curd, rice, green/raw banana curry, coconut water, and buttermilk. Avoid milk products except curd.
You are not contagious once symptoms resolve, but continue maintaining proper hygiene.
Treatment plan
To manage dehydration and discomfort, start with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and use Electral Powder for additional rehydration and electrolyte replenishment. Take tablet Ondem 4 milligrams (Ondansetron) three times a day before meals for two days to control nausea and vomiting. For abdominal cramps, use Tablet Buscopan Plus (Hyoscine butylbromide and Paracetamol) three times a day after meals for two to three days, tapering off as the pain decreases. To soothe throat and stomach irritation caused by vomiting, take Syrup Mucaine Gel Mint, five milliliters three times a day.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
