How long does a norovirus infection last?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Our entire household has been hit with what I think is norovirus since my son’s birthday party three days ago. I am a 42-year-old mom, and I have never experienced stomach cramps this painful. The vomiting finally stopped yesterday, but the diarrhea continues. I can barely stay hydrated. My husband and two kids have the same symptoms. My youngest (age 4) seems especially affected; he is lethargic and has not kept anything down for almost 48 hours. His lips look dry, and he is barely using the bathroom. I am worried about dehydration. How long does this typically last? Is it safe to give him Pepto-Bismol or Imodium? Should I take him to the emergency room? Also, I work at a daycare center; how long should I stay home to avoid spreading this to the children there?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Firstly do not panic. This infection stays for three to seven days. Symptoms generally decrease with time. However, the most important thing to look into is hydration. Please stay hydrated and consider doing the same with the other members affected.

Coming to your other point, Imodium or Pepto can be taken in limited dosages by adults. However, it is not very safe for very young kids to take it without a doctor's advice. Many times, it is good to let out the toxin released by the virus or bacteria. For detailed understanding and appropriate dosage, I need to understand how many dosages you took or the complete medications you are taking. Please consider taking a personal consultation online.

Till then, please follow the mentioned precautions and guidelines-

  1. You do not need to abstain from going to your job if you are fine. Only contaminated food, water, or vomit particles will be transmitted. So, maintain hygiene at your workplace.

  2. Keep yourself and your family hydrated with water, coconut water, and electrolytes. If vomiting and diarrhea have reduced and your kid can take orally, actively, you can watch for six hours more and then decide for an emergency. Rest keeping him hydrated is the main role.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.

Treatment plan

Enterogermia capsule for adults and your kid Enterogermia vial (oral consumption watery solution) - once a day for four days. Tablet Buscogast 10mg (milligrams) two to three times a day as per your stomach pain. ORS (oral rehydration solution) and electoral powder. You can take any band with the same active ingredients.

Preventive measures

Preventive measures: Avoid wheat products, high fiber, or leafy veggies. Rice, poha, curd, or plain khichidi are safer options. Cooked raw bananas are also good to consume.
