What causes back pain while sitting in certain positions?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have lower back pain when I am sitting or lying down in certain positions. When I straighten my back out, and when I try to stretch it, I get pain in my middle or lower back. I am a gamer, and I sit down in pretzel style on my chair with my body leaning forward, most comfortable while playing games. I have never seen a doctor for this, and now I am interested in doing so. I would say it has gotten worse in the last four months due to lifting my dog who had problems with her back legs, so I was constantly lifting her all the time, and she weighed around 90 lbs.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You may be suffering from a disc bulge. Pain is considered chronic once it lasts for more than three months and exceeds the body’s natural healing process. Chronic pain in the lower back often involves a disc problem, a joint problem, and an irritated nerve root. The common causes include lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc, facet joint dysfunction, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and osteoarthritis deformity.

Follow the below exercises for ten days, lower tummy strengthening, deep abdominal strengthening, bridge, pelvis tilt, lower backstretch, leg stretch, and piriformis stretch. Apply Diclofenac (Cataflam) ointment on the pain and cover it with a cloth, clean it after ten minutes following hot water fermentation. This process will help relieve pain immediately.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause is poor posture.

Investigations to be done

Do MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the lumbar spine.

Preventive measures

Avoid prolonged sitting and heavy lifting.
