What are the side effects of ultra-processed foods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, doctor,

I have a question about the current ultra-processed food trend. I have read that frozen dinners, salty snacks, sugary cereals, and pretty much anything in a packet are deemed "ultra-processed." The added preservatives, flavorings, and other artificial ingredients make these foods extremely unhealthy. How important is this ultra-processed stuff? Is it much worse than eating traditional home-cooked meals? Is the danger exaggerated by yet another nutritional fad? I will admit that convenience foods make up a significant portion of my diet because I am constantly on the move. Should I be concerned about the potential long-term implications here?

Kindly help

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query and understand your concern.

From a nutritional standpoint, it is fine if you consume these processed or frozen dishes without adding extra oil, additional salt, red chile, or pepper powder.

Air fryers or grill ovens are typically the greatest options for such dishes because they allow you to cook without using oil and consume processed foods safely. However, cooking on the stove and adding salt or oil on your own can contribute to empty calories. You can consume more fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and unsweetened juices, to name a few natural foods, and this is not a nutrition fad. You can eat processed foods; it is not an absolute no. But in moderation and within limits not more than three to four times per week. That would be off-bounds. Exercise more if your diet in general has to do more with processed or refined foods and watch the labels because the more added sugar or salt, the higher the risk of type 2 diabetes or hypertension

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.

Regards.
