Can taking phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors or discontinuing antidepressants help overcome secondary impotence?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 44 years old and have been dealing with anxiety and depression for many years. The use of anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications has led to impotence. What steps can I take? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Most likely, it is not primary impotence but secondary impotence (characterized by low libido, poor erection, and difficulties with ejaculation), which is often caused by many antidepressant medications. You have two options available to you. Firstly, you could consider using medications that assist with erectile dysfunction, such as Tadalafil or Sildenafil. There is a wide variety of other aids available on the market that you could explore. Secondly, you might choose to take a three-month drug holiday from antidepressants. In this case, your libido and basic sexual potency should begin to recover by the second week of stopping the medication.

Thanks and regards.
