What symptoms will a person with hypomania show?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have bipolar disorder, but I cannot afford medication for a while (I am still new to learning about it as I only got diagnosed a few months back). Anyway, for the last ten days, I have been having trouble sleeping (three to five hours a night), but I still have lots of energy when I am awake. I am speaking fast (my friends have commented on it), my thoughts are racing, and I am flirting with strangers. Also, I keep thinking I see bugs, but there are not any, and I am not sure if this is hypomania. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. Regarding your situation, you may suffer from a manic disorder, and it is essential to be under medication treatment. Medication will not entirely solve your problem, but it can control your symptoms and limit the hyper characters. I can guess that you would not take medicines due to side effects, but it is expected in the first treatment period. However, it is still early to judge your disorder nature. Come back to me with more details, as bipolar disorder is not associated with insomnia and should be associated more with long-time sleeping and increased appetite. Also, I would like to ask, do you have mood swings or hear voices in your ear?

I hope this helps.

Thanks and take care.
