What can cause a popping sound during hip movement?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old male with approximately 5 feet 10 inches in height. Whenever I flex and externally rotate my hip at the same time, I hear a really loud pop. My lower back, around the sacroiliac joint, also feels tight, but I am not sure if it is related. I tried stretching my iliopsoas, but it did not help.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

A loud pop in the hip during movement, especially when flexing and externally rotating, can sometimes be caused by a couple of factors. It could be related to the movement of tendons over bones or the snapping of ligaments. Tightness in the sacroiliac joint area might suggest that there is compensatory tension in the surrounding muscles, which could be contributing.

I suggest you follow the below-mentioned instructions:

  1. Rest and Ice: If you are experiencing discomfort, rest and apply ice to help reduce inflammation.

  2. Gentle Stretching: In addition to the iliopsoas, consider gentle stretches for the hip flexors, glutes, and lower back.

  3. Strengthening: Strengthening the surrounding muscles, such as the glutes and core, can help stabilize the hip and lower back.

  4. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can assess your hip and lower back mechanics and provide a tailored program.

  5. Consult a Professional: If the popping persists or you experience pain, visit a nearby physiotherapist or orthopedist for a thorough evaluation.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
