Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 30 year old female. I have been having hair loss for a year.

  1. Could you please explain the different types of hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and alopecia areata, and their respective causes?
  2. What are the most common causes of hair loss, both in men and women, and how can one determine the underlying cause of their hair loss?
  3. What are the typical symptoms and signs of hair loss, and how can one distinguish between normal hair shedding and excessive hair loss?
  4. What treatment options are available for different types of hair loss?
  5. Are there specific hair care practices and products that can help prevent or minimize hair loss?
  6. How can I care for my hair to promote its health and growth?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Telogen effluvium is the temporary shedding of hair, which might be due to micronutrient deficiency, post-surgery, post-viral illness, or stress. In this, hair fall will diffuse all over the scalp. Androgenetic alopecia is a patterned hair loss that is mostly genetic, and there would be thinning of hair over the vertex part and frontal receding of the hairline.

Many treatment protocols are available depending on the type and severity of hair fall, ranging from a topical solution like Minoxidil to hair transplantation (PRP therapy and microneedling). Oral finasteride helps in controlling mph, which acts by inhibiting DHT, which is responsible for the thinning of hair.

Thank you.
