Can any supplement help regain tendon and ligament weakness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need a multivitamin supplement and digestive enzymes to regain bone, ligaments, and tendons weakened by digestive issues. Malabsorption of essential nutrients due to digestive conditions like chronic atopic gastritis resulted in bone loss, osteoporosis, low stomach acid, and joint weakness like ligaments of knee, etc. I need supplements that do not depend on stomach acid.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

After going through your query and detailed report I suggest to calm your gut first which in turn helps to increase absorption of vitamin and calcium and start with L- glutamine supplement 5g capsule daily preferably before going to bed or at least an hour before meals. Later you can opt for multivitamin supplements with good food intake.

Along with that follow these tips.

1. Increase high protein diet, including almonds, vegetables, fish, chicken, and eggs.

2. Do muscle strength exercises if allowed by ortho.

3. Increase fluid intake.

4. Do rest for 8-9 hours of sleep.

5. Manage stress with meditation.

6. Do breathing exercises.

7. Manage to follow small frequent meals.

8. Do take 2500 kcal diet.

If required you need to add supplement (whey protein) L-Glutamine.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Is there any specific L- Glutamine supplement brand I can buy? There are so many. Also, suggest the whey protein brand also.

Answered by Sumiya Sulthana

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There are two brands Naked L-Glutamine and Optimal L-Glutamine choose your choice. For whey protein, you can opt for Isolate whey protein or Optimum Nutrition gold whey protein. I am not for the brand until it serves the purpose. I think these brands will be helpful for you.

Patient's Query

Thank you for the reply doctor,

Also, I want to ensure this does not contain any gluten, as I am on a gluten-free diet.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, L-glutamine is a gluten-free supplement. I have gone through all your blood investigation reports, and they are normal. Your HB is 15 g/dl, so you need not worry and do not require additional supplements. You can opt for natural enzymes from fruits like pineapple, ginger, mango, papaya, and kiwi. Make sure you eat one of these foods as a mid-morning snack. Of course, your sleeping pattern matters a lot for digestion. Our body detoxifies the liver from 12 am to 3 am when we are at rest. Similarly, for better absorption, a proper sleep pattern matters. You can start meditation to improve this.

I understand the stress and weakness you are going through. It will take time to settle down gradually.

Best regards.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you for the reply doctor,

As I mentioned, I already enjoy fruits like papaya, kiwi, mango, and pomegranate. My sleep issues stem from low iron and vitamin B12 levels. Unfortunately, these issues have been getting worse over time. In medicine, it is always better to address problems early rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen. I did not even know I had gastritis until an endoscopy revealed it. Chronic gastritis has led to low stomach acid and intrinsic factor loss due to erosion, causing problems with calcium and B12 absorption. Since this is a nutrition consultation, I want to mention that I can not rely solely on natural methods. Due to my chronic conditions, I still need to take supplements to maintain my health.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. As part of a holistic approach, I would prefer the most natural methods, but if you feel that medication is the best way, you might consider digestive enzyme capsules. They are gluten-free supplements, FDA (Food and Drug Administration)-approved, and safe. You should take them daily, one capsule before each meal, to improve absorption and help reduce gastritis. Additionally, you can take:

  1. A protein supplement daily, mixed with thin milk or warm water, twice a day.
  2. L-glutamine, 5 mg, before going to bed.

Best regards.

Thank you.
