What is the reason behind a 75-year-old woman forgetting things and making sounds while sleeping?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother, who is about 75 years old, is showing signs of memory loss. Our parental place is now uninhabited. My mother resides with my younger brother. She forgets the door, kitchen, bathroom, and other things. But she remembers old things. Secondly, she makes sounds during the night and during sleep. She sleeps only for about 6 to 7 hours. I think she needs some medication. Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your mother probably has Alzheimer's dementia, a type of neurodegenerative disease affecting old age person. In this, the person loses his recent memory; however, long-term or old memory is spared initially, but eventually, that too is lost slowly. To confirm the diagnosis, you need to take her to a neurologist or psychiatrist for evaluation. In the early part of the illness, Donepezil and related drugs are used to slow disease progression. Also, try to schedule her activities and sleeping time and do not argue with her.

I hope this clarifies your concern.

Thanks and regards.
