Do conditions like stress, dietary changes, or infection cause altered blood sugar levels?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mom is 45 years old and she is having diabetes for the last three years. She is trying to keep her blood glucose at a normal level, by walking for 15 minutes every day. Currently, she is taking tablet Metformin 500 mg in the morning and at night after food. Sometimes she also takes multivitamin tablets. But still, her fasting blood sugar level is at 160 mg/dl. Why is it so? Is it due to any underlying condition? If so, how should we find that out? What other measures should she take to bring the blood sugar level to normal? Please help. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. From the description you have given, it seems her current medication is not sufficient to control her blood sugar levels and hence you need to add another anti-diabetic medication for the same. I would suggest you add an additional medication like tablet Teneligliptin or tablet Glimepiride consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent. But for starting a new medication, we need complete information like postprandial and fasting blood sugar levels, serum creatinine, and urine routine examination. However, it is important to note that it may also be a temporary increase, for example, stress, infection, or a change in diet due to travel. In such cases, new medications are not required. It is also important to note that as age advances, diabetes may not be able to be controlled only with diet changes and exercise alone, increasing the dosage of medications may also become necessary. Please revert to the tests as advised and let me know once they are done so that I may advise better. I hope your queries are resolved and any further queries are welcome.
