Are chia seeds good for health?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been seeing chia seeds everywhere on social media lately. People are saying they are some kind of superfood. What is the deal with these tiny seeds? Are they good for you? Are there any side effects I should know about before I start adding them to my smoothies?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Chia seeds, celebrated for their rich nutritional profile including omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and antioxidants, have garnered attention for their health benefits. Experts recommend a daily intake of one to two tablespoons. Excessive consumption can cause digestive discomfort.

About 75 % of the fats in chia seeds are omega-3 fatty acids, mainly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and around 20 % are omega-6 fatty acids. Chia seeds are the best plant-based source of omega-3s, even better than flaxseed. These tiny seeds are also packed with Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and minerals, and they can easily be sprinkled on any food.

The health benefits of chia seeds include reducing blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, supporting digestive health, helping with weight management, reducing inflammation, and controlling diabetes. They also protect against chronic diseases and can improve anxiety and depression.

However, eating too many chia seeds may cause digestive issues, allergic reactions, or weight gain. In moderation, chia seeds are a great, nutritious addition to a healthy diet. They come from a plant called *Salvia*, which is part of the mint family.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Take care.

Thank you.
