What are the benefits of eating pomegranate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

What are the benefits of eating pomegranate? How can it be beneficial for my body? Can anyone have this fruit, or is there any restriction for having this fruit? How does it react when ingested by the body, and is it good to have it with or without seeds? I have also heard that eating the white fleshy part of the pomegranate's skin helps treat anemia and increase hemoglobin levels. Is that true?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Pomegranates are nutritious and offer several health benefits:

  1. Rich in Antioxidants: Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants, which can help protect your body's cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  2. Heart Health: Studies suggest that pomegranate may have a positive impact on heart health by improving cholesterol levels and reducing blood pressure.
  3. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The fruit has anti-inflammatory effects, potentially beneficial for conditions related to inflammation.
  4. Vitamin C: Pomegranates are a good source of vitamin C, which is essential for a healthy immune system.
  5. Fiber: The seeds are high in fiber, promoting digestive health and helping with satiety.

As for consumption:

  1. Seeds: Eating the seeds is generally safe and provides additional fiber. Some find them a bit crunchy but they are edible.
  2. Arils (Juicy Seed Pods): These are the red, juicy parts surrounding the seeds and are typically consumed. They are sweet and tart.
  3. White Fleshy Part: The white fleshy part inside the pomegranate skin, often called the pith, doesn't have substantial scientific evidence to support its use in treating anemia or increasing hemoglobin levels. The majority of beneficial nutrients in pomegranates, including antioxidants and vitamins, are concentrated in the arils (juicy seed pods) and seeds.

Most people can enjoy pomegranates, but if you have specific medical conditions or are on certain medications, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. Enjoying pomegranates as part of a balanced diet can contribute to overall health.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
