Can a new mattress cause back pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My wife and I just bought a new mattress, and both are experiencing lower back pain when bending forward. We used to sleep on a soft and firm (dual mattresses controlled by air) mattress. The new one is a memory foam which is considered soft but is firm under the very soft three to four inches. The fact that we both feel lumbar soreness, which makes me think that the mattress is not adjusting. Should we go for a firmer or softer mattress? Or stay away from foam altogether?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • According to me, the change of mattress has caused back pain since you both used different type of mattresses.
  • The mattress should neither be very soft nor very firm. It should be medium. It will take time for both of you to adjust to the new mattress.
  • For pain relief, I suggest you both can apply the ice pack for 15 minutes, twice a day.
