Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I would like to know the connection between cystic acne and mental health conditions, specifically the ways acne can indirectly exacerbate anxiety and depression.
How often these issues occur together? What are the current theories for why they occur together so often? How are they treated when they occur together and are there any medication interactions to keep in mind?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
As far as the connection between acne and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression is concerned, definitely we as a psychologist come across such cases of young girls who develop an inferiority complex and doubt over their self-image due to the perceived ugliness over their face. It can not be said that this is the sole factor leading to anxiety or depression among young girls, but it can be counted as one of the factors affecting the mental health of women.
Currently, no such theoretical lines are developed which indicate a connection between acne and depression, or anxiety. However, such research can be planned to see the relationship between the two health conditions, that is, cystic acne and depression, or anxiety. Though the literature on self-image and appearance anxiety might provide some clues about the relationship between the two conditions. A doctor may prescribe medication to reduce cystic acne, for improvement of the client's self-image. Counseling can serve the best. You may counsel the patient yourself or can consult a psychologist for the patient's mental health improvement.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
