Can the impacts and pain on the leg affect the surgical screw in my knee?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 20 years of age. Ten years ago, I sustained an injury to my left knee, which was later diagnosed as a torn ACL ligament. To address this, I underwent a successful ACL reconstruction surgery (using a hamstring graft). Recently, I experienced a sudden jolt to my knee while sleeping, followed by another impact when a heavy object fell on it. Subsequently, I have been noticing mild discomfort when extending my leg, along with more intense pain when applying pressure to the area where the incision was made for drilling, specifically on the lower bone's left side, which is to the right of the knee. I am concerned about the possibility of the screw that was used during the surgery being displaced or damaged due to these incidents. Unfortunately, I am currently facing financial limitations. As a result, I am seeking advice on steps I can take at home to assess whether everything is fine or if there might be an issue. It is important to note that I would prefer not to inform my parents about this situation. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Now that the surgery is behind you and it went well, there is really no need to overly stress about this. It is possible that the sudden jolt you felt came from lifting something heavy. If you are feeling uncertain, getting an X-ray done could help ease your mind. But from what it seems, the situation might not be as concerning as you are imagining.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
