Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son has been suffering with pain while urinating. He is a 6 month old baby boy. Here a local doctor did a urine test and said as Escherichia coli urinary tract infections. What is the proper treatment for this?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the report, your child is having urinary tract infection, which is resistant to many oral antibiotics.

The only oral antibiotic it is sensitive to is Co-trimoxazole that is Septran. You can start a course of Septran for at least seven days and repeat a urine test after seven days. The other option is start IV therapy with injection Ceftriaxone and Amikacin and repeat the test after five days. IV therapy is more effective than oral. It is uncommon in a boy of this age to have UTI, so we need to evaluate for the cause of UTI as it might be due to some underlying conditions which can be treated if diagnosed.

To evaluate for this you need to do an ultrasound of the abdomen with kidneys. Depending on the report, your pediatrician will guide you with further steps. Presently start with the antibiotic therapy, either oral or IV depending on your child comfortability. Consult your doctor, discuss with him or her and take the medicine with consent. There is nothing to panic about as this is most commonly seen in children. It is not a serious condition and it is curable. So, relax and start the treatment.
