Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

We are looking to move a quarter-mile into our farmland. Kindly help me know the potential health risks to my toddler and our future children. Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Exposing kids at an early age makes their immunity stronger. This has been a proven statement by many researchers. Ensure the kid is not putting anything from the soil into the mouth and wash hands and body after returning home. There are many commensal microbes in the soil that do not cause disease, but they trigger immunity and boost our immunity. If at all any small infection or minor laceration, it can always be treated. But the immunity that develops during the early age from the soil nature is lifelong. Hence, please go ahead. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply. My concern is with the pesticides used on the crops. I came across many studies regarding the link between residential proximity to the farmland and childhood cancer (leukemia). What is your opinion on this? Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. People working in chemical factories are prone to some occupational diseases and cancer due to specific chemicals. It happens only if the chemical enters the body (oral, inhalation, or skin) for an extended period. The pesticides paralyze the insects, and the insects die because of breathing difficulty; few pesticides are neurotoxic. If a pregnant mother is exposed to pesticides, then the fetus growth gets affected. Pesticides rarely cause cancer. On the farm, the pesticides sprayed might be there on the leaves of the plants. Mostly, they get diluted in the air by ventilation in open space, hence becomes weaker. They also get washed away by rain or watering. I suggest you take the following precautions; 1) Avoid exposing your children to the pesticides for three days from the day of application of the pesticide. By that time, it gets diluted or washed away and becomes weaker. Now the chemical toxicity is negligible. 2) Wash hands and body with soap after coming back from the farm. These two ensure safety. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much for the reply. The crops that are being sprayed are a quarter-mile away from our home. Does it make the air dangerous for me and my fetus while pregnant or for my children? Thanks.

Answered by Dr. Arul Amuthan L

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. You are right. Direct contact on spraying is dangerous. On the day of spraying, the surrounding air carries the pesticide, so the atmosphere is also harmful on that day. But, within a few winds here and there, it would be washed away. Then the place is safe. Moreover, the pesticides get diluted in the air within a quarter-mile. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply. Is a quarter-mile distance away form the farmland is enough to stay safe from the pesticides? Are there nothing to worry about even on days they spray pesticides? Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. The wind dilutes the spray along with its flow, so the spray is taken away from the spraying site. The dilution process depends on air circulation. If good air circulation is there, within an hour, it would be cleared off from the spraying site and makes the air fresh. If no winding or breezing, then the dilution process is slow. So, the clearing of sprayed material depends on the air circulation. So, it takes from one hour to one day for the clearing process. Kindly use an N95 mask to protect the entry of chemicals into your lung. The wind clears (purifies) the air in a short period. Another option is you need to move apart from the site for a half-day and then return. Regards.
