Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old male. I am not able to concentrate on my studies regularly. After approximately 20 minutes, my mind starts random thinking. Things like what should I do today evening, what are my friends doing currently and anything baseless. I am not able to study correctly. And this is my daily routine. One thing I have noticed that I day dream more when I am alone. Is this a severe problem? Do I need some medication or any test you recommend to check my if I am suffering form any mental disease?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

No, it is quite normal. Humans have an attention span of 45 minutes average (adults). Studying requires focused attention which cannot be consecutively 20 to 30 minutes.

But you can divide your study time using study strategies as follows,

1. Commit yourself for 20 minutes laps of studies.

2. Take a break after 30 minutes each for 5 to 10 mins.

3. In a break, you must walk around. May check your phone or wander around.

4. Use jotting down your thoughts in five minutes and say to yourself that I will do it later.
