Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a parasitic infection. An Ayurveda expert prescribed Vidangarishta and Balarishta for helminths in the dosage of two teaspoons of each medicine twice daily. I want to take them, but they both contain 5 to 10 % of self-generated alcohol. I am, however, sensitive to alcohol. Could you tell me an easy way to evaporate this alcohol?

Is it acceptable to add two teaspoons of both the medicines in a cup and leave it open at room temperature? If yes, then how long will it take for all the alcohol content in it to evaporate? Would keeping these two medicine bottles open at room temperature for some days help evaporate all its alcohol? If yes, then please specify the duration.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The alcohol content in the drug has the role of preservative. So, I feel it should not be evaporated. If we evaporate alcohol, then its expiry period would be reduced. Instead I suggest you mixing the advised dose with hot water, stir it well, wait for ten minutes, and consume. Heat will evaporate alcohol immediately. If buttermilk or lemon juice is consumed immediately (10-30 minutes) after consuming the alcohol-based Ayurvedic drug, they neutralize (nullify) the alcohol effect. I feel this is the best practice you can do. Another option is to ask the same physician to prescribe alternative drugs without alcohol. The similar herbal ingredients are available in different forms (Kashaya, Choorna, Aristam, etc.). The same effect can be obtained with another form of the drug.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Could you please tell me the best alternative forms of these two drugs without any alcohol?

I would prefer them in tablet form or water extracted Kashaya. The doctor is only available to talk online. He has sent me an email saying I must take it, despite the alcohol, which causes me skin flare-ups even in low doses. I request you to give an idea of the best alternatives. I will present them to him for consideration, either now or later.

Thanks and regards.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your situation.

For helminth, tablet Albendazole once at night for the first day followed by tablet Mebendazole twice daily for the next three days. This is the easiest method to deal with worms in the intestine. This course needs to be repeated every six months. If the pinworms around the anal region cause itching at night, wash with water and wipe it with a towel and make it dry. Put these clothes in the washing machine immediately. Apply talcum powder in the anal region. This method will kill the worms that have come to the anal area to lay eggs. Practice this method whenever there is itching. This is only for the pinworm, not for intra-intestinal worms.

If you do not like this method or if it is not effective, only then use ayurveda for worms, as follows;

1) Vidanga Choornam (Embelia Ribes) in the dosage of 2 grams with water twice daily for two months. It is an alternative to Vidangarishta. This is directly for the worms. Or take Guggulu Panchapala Choornam (Guggulu, Triphala, long pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom) in the dosage of one teaspoon of this powder with water twice daily. Another alternative is Taramandura guda (Mandura, Gomutra, Guda). Take two tablets twice daily.

2) Shaddharana Choornam (Chitraka, Indrayava, Paadha, Katuka, Athivisha, and Daruharida). Take one teaspoonn of the Choornam with water twice daily for one month. This is to improve digestion and absorption in the worm infestation. Should take this along with the first drug.

He must have prescribed Balarishta to improve general health. There are many other alternatives, such as the Ashwagantha tablet as an alternative. Kindly get his suggestions furthermore.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have recently started taking anti-helminthic medicines (primarily vidanga) as discussed in my previous email to you. The expert advised me to take them for 1 month. In this email, I want to explain my condition to you in detail, and ask for a treatment that you feel is best for my specific health concern. I will then begin using this (if my current medications do not give any benefit after a month). I have a complicated health complaint. A microbiologist diagnosed me as having Strongyloides Stercoralis after blood tests and history taking. It is systemic (on the skin, brain, in the blood and other organs). I got infested when I am an infant (so its been causing symptoms for over 40 years). My immune system became compromised early on due to regular Steroid use for my asthma. My infestation became chronic when 12 years old). The worms carry bacteria (like Staph, E-Coli) and hide in their biofilm, so the conditon is deeply-rooted. Allopathic drugs given (Ivermectin, Albendazole) never helped. Keeping my weght, age, height etc in mind, what natural remedies and dosages would you suggest for me? (using your knowledge of naturopathy, siddha, herbs etc). Also, I have a separate related question. A few months ago I ordered some ayurvedic medicines (because I read they can specifically help against Strongyloides, but I never started taking them (because I did not want to self-medicate, and was not sure about dosages for someone of my condition and severity). The medicines are Kottakkal's Krimighnavatika tablets and Vyas' Kriminol syrup. If these can enter the blood and help systemically, then I would be thankful if you could mention dosages and duration for these medicines also? Regards.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

After you reveal Strongyloides Stercoralis, I would think differently. The mentioned herbal drugs can act in the intestine, and destroy worms, they may not be able to destroy worms within body organs, that are outside the intestine. Moreover, this worm affects your immune system function and you get many allergic symptoms. So, I would like to prescribe two drugs that can target this worm and enhance your own immunity to destroy it. This is the only way to eradicate it as well as prevent other allergic symptoms. To destroy intestinal worms, you continue vidanga-based drugs and Kriminol syrup for one to two months.

a) Nandhi mezhugu capsules (Semicarpus anacardius, Cow ghee, Strygnus potatorum) - 200 (morning one and night one after food)

b) Poorna Chandirodhayam Tablets (Swarnabhasma; Suddha Parada; Suddha Gandhaka) - 200 (one in the morning and once at night after food).

Buy these two drugs and consume them two times after food. You will be all right from worms and allergic diseases. Your immunity is taken care of by these two drugs.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I did purchase the medicines you mentioned. Correcting my immune system with them will clearly take time as my condition is long-standing. I want to add another product. I noticed that you have knowledge of Ayush therapies. Is there a remedy in Unani that could help against Strongyloides in the blood? Regards.

Answered by Dr. Arul Amuthan L

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The same herbals are used in Unani system for the same purpose. Other Unani therapies like cupping and leach therapy are not used for Strongyloides. Still you may consult an Unani expert about it.

Thank you.
