Gallbladder removal surgery or cholecystectomy is the surgery done to remove the gallbladder, which is an organ present below the liver and helps store the digestive fluid (bile) produced by your liver. The gallbladder is removed if there are gallstones in the gallbladder or bile duct, gallbladder inflammation, and inflammation of pancreas seen during gallstones. A cholecystectomy can be done laparoscopically, that is by making small incisions or holes, through which the instruments and camera are inserted, or as open surgery, where a big incision is made. Some risks associated with this surgery are bleeding, bile leak, blood clots, infection, and pneumonia.
