Pedicle screw and rods are fixed during a spinal fusion surgery to secure and strengthen the vertebrae. Pedicle screw fixation is done to hold the bone grafts in position as the spine heals after an operation. Metal rods are used to connect the pedicle screws, which provide an anchor. Indications for pedicle fixation are post-laminectomy spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, degenerative scoliosis, unstable fractures, tumor, infection, etc. Pedicle fixation has to be avoided in case of infection and fusions that are successful without fixation.
