Abnormal growth of cells in the thyroid, which is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, is called thyroid cancer. It does not cause any symptoms during the early stages, but in the later stages, it results in a lump in the neck, hoarseness of voice, difficulty swallowing, neck and throat pain, and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Depending on the cells that form cancer, the types are papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer. Females are more prone than men. Genetics and exposure to radiation increase your risk. Treatment includes removing the entire or part of the thyroid gland or removing lymph nodes in the neck.
