Targeted therapy or molecular targeted therapy, like chemotherapy, use drugs to treat cancer. But unlike chemotherapy, that prevents the cancer cells from growing and dividing, targeted therapy block proteins and genes that promote cancer cells to grow and spread. As a result, it is more effective than chemotherapy, and sometimes it is used along with chemotherapy. It is used for colorectal cancer, cancer of the head and neck, breast cancer, multiple myeloma, melanoma, lymphoma, and prostate cancer. A few examples of drugs used for targeted therapy are Imatinib, Gefitinib, Vintafolide, Temsirolimus, Rituximab, etc.
