Endoscopy is a procedure used to diagnose conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. It is a nonsurgical procedure that uses an endoscope, which is a long flexible tube with a light and camera attached to one end. This tube is inserted into the digestive tract through the mouth or anus, and the doctor will be able to see the insides of the tract on a monitor. The types of endoscopy are:
1. Upper endoscopy – Here the endoscope is inserted through the mouth, and upper part of the intestine, stomach, and esophagus can be viewed.
2. Colonoscopy – Here the large intestines are viewed after the endoscope is passed through the rectum.
