Polycythemia is a rare blood cancer caused due to overproduction of red blood cells. Excess RBC results in blood thickening and reduced blood flow. The symptoms of polycythemia are tiredness, itching, breathing problems, unintentional weight loss, blurred vision, profuse sweating, and bleeding. In advanced cases, the joints become swollen, bone pain, gums bleed, and excessive bleeding occurs from cuts. There is no known cure for this condition. Aspirin and other blood thinners are given and phlebotomy (removal of a small amount of blood from the body) is performed.
