Bleeding disorders are a group of conditions where individuals cannot form a proper blood clot. Bleeding disorders are usually inherited and can be caused due to defect in platelets or clotting proteins, low red blood cell count, and vitamin K deficiency. The most common types of bleeding disorders are:
- Hemophilia A and B – Results from low levels of clotting factors in the blood.
- Von Willebrand’s diseases – Caused when the blood lacks the von Willebrand factor.
- Factor II, V, VII, X, or XII – Results from a deficiency of any one of these clotting factors.
The common symptoms are unexplained bleeding, easy bruising, nosebleeds, and bleeding into joints. Iron supplements, blood transfusion, factor replacement therapy, and fresh frozen plasma transfusion are used in the treatment of bleeding disorders.
