A type of depression that affects older adults is called late-onset depression. It usually affects adults older than 60 years. It results in more cases of suicide than early-onset depression. This type of depression is difficult to diagnose as the symptoms are not apparent in old age. It can also cause dementia and other memory problems. Some of the symptoms include weight loss, delusion, and loss of interest in daily activities. The presence of some chronic illness or conditions that result in long-term pain can also cause depression. Late-onset depression management requires a multidisciplinary approach with involves psychiatrist, occupational therapist, dieticians, and language therapist.
