The type of arthritis that affects people who have psoriasis is called psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition, where the life cycle of the skin cells speeds up, causing extra skin cells to accumulate on the surface, resulting in rough and scaly skin. Some of the symptoms seen in psoriatic arthritis are swollen fingers and toes, foot pain, and lower back pain. In some patients, psoriatic arthritis leads to arthritis mutilans, which is a painful and severe form of the disease. It can lead to permanent disabilities. Medicines used to treat psoriatic arthritis are NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs), immunosuppressants, and TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor) inhibitors.
