Molluscum contagiosum is a contagious viral infection that causes raised nodules or papules on the skin, which are called molluscum bodies or Mollusca or condyloma subcutaneum. These lesions are usually painless and do not itch. They commonly affect the trunk, arms, and legs. After a person gets infected, it takes anywhere from a week to 6 months for the symptoms to begin. Mollusca that is sexually transmitted results in lesions on the genitalia, groin, lower abdomen, and inner thigh. It takes about 6 to 12 weeks for the Mollusca to heal and it generally does not leave a scar. The treatment options are curettage, diathermy, cryotherapy, and laser therapy.
