Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition, where the skin folds around the neck, groin, and armpits become thick and dark. It is related to obesity and diabetes. Acanthosis nigricans can cause dryness, itching, roughness, and odor. The causes are insulin resistance, hormonal changes, genetics, use of birth control pills and corticosteroids, etc. Sometimes in people with some cancers, a malignant form of acanthosis nigricans can occur. The skin changes usually go away once the underlying condition is treated. Also, laser skin lightening, antibacterial soaps, and topical antibiotics are used.
