Excessive grinding or clenching of your teeth is called bruxism. It is when you clench your teeth unconsciously while awake or during sleep. Severe bruxism might cause headaches, jaw pain, and might damage your teeth. The top portion of the teeth gets flattened, causing dentine exposure and sensitivity. It might cause the tooth to chip or fracture. Continuous bruxism might cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which results in lockjaw and pain in the jaw, face, and neck. It might also cause pain near the temples and ear opening. You can also injure the inner mucosa of the cheeks. The sound produced from clenching might disturb your sleep. Bruxism is commonly seen in people who are stressed, take antidepressants, or have a family history. It can be treated with reducing stress and using mouthguards.
